Learn fly-fishing basics in one of our free Fly Fishing 101 classes. Perfect for beginners of all ages, the Fly Fishing 101 course includes free lessons on fly casting and outfit rigging.
Fly Fishing 201
If youve already completed Fly Fishing 101, youre ready for the next step. Join us for a short outing on local water and a chance to catch your first fish! A nominal fee for the outing may apply.
A free Trout Unlimited Membership—a $35 value—is included for all FF101 and FF201 graduates. Upon completion of the course, you will receive special in-store offers, valid for the purchase of Orvis products.
Whether you have come up through the Orvis FF101/201 program or you are someone that just wants a little guidance on how to become a better fly fisher, nothing beats time on the water with a knowledgeable guide or instructor. Our FF301 program is the next step in your fly-fishing education. Designed to give you a great on-the-water fly-fishing experience, the day's instruction is built around specific techniques and local fisheries.
Store Manager: Jim Wallace
Jim grew up in Louisiana, learning how to fly fish for bass and pan fish. He picked up trout fishing when he moved to western New York and has enjoyed exploring the many local streams. He’s also had the chance to fish in New Mexico, Colorado, Maine, and New Hampshire. Jim has over 25 years experience in outdoor retail, working for both independent stores and with Eastern Mountain Sports at the store, district, and corporate levels. He’s excited to lead the Orvis Rochester store and looks forward to outfitting you for your next adventure—be it to your local pub or fishing destination.
Fishing Manager: Ethan Law
Ethan is an accomplished angler and a member of Team Freestone- a competitive Fly Fishing team. He competed in the Lake Placid National Fly Fishing Championships and has been a featured fly tier at Syracuses Tie One On event for anglers.
In addition, Ethan is a well-known ambassador of the sport in the Rochester community. Currently, he serves on the Board of Directors for the Seth Green TU chapter. Ethan also volunteers his time with the Wounded Warriors Project and Casting for Hope.
